How it began
The Story of
- 1For nearly 9 years, Julien Verlaguet and the Skiplabs team created the languages and frameworks used by thousands of engineers at Meta to build some of the company’s most widely used features and services.
- 2As Meta grew, Julien saw engineers increasingly used reactivity to build new features that were fast & efficient but could still work within the company’s increasingly complex landscape and requirements.
- 3Building upon ideas from React and GraphQL, the Skiplabs team developed a new framework that made it easy for Meta engineers to build new reactive programs.
- 4Seeing there were no similar frameworks available outside of Meta, Julien and the team founded Skiplabs to bring reactivity to the next million software engineers.

Timeline
- 2012Created Hack, providing static types, async, and generics to the PHP user community
- 2014Facebook open sources Hack and HHVM under the MIT license
- 2017Created Skiplang: a programming language designed for reactive programming
- 2018Facebook open sources Skip under the MIT license
- 2019SKAI (“Skip for AI”) introduced at Facebook to apply reactivity to AI applications
- 2020Skip adds a language: independent reactive runtime substituting for other infrastructure used at Facebook
- 2024Skip Framework released: a Typescript-native framework for writing and running reactive functions and services based on the Skip Runtime
